This week, we...
- learned about alliteration
- learned about patterns
- learned about family life in Tunisia
- learned about parts of the ear
- learned how sound travels through solids, liquids, and gases
**Sports Day is tomorrow: rain or shine! Please come dressed for the weather!
Next week is our very last week! We will...
- learn about mass
- create a memory book of our year
- learn about Rights of the Child
- learn about soundproofing and animal hearing
A note for families:
Next week, the year end report card will come home with your student on Wednesday (our last day of school!). This second reporting period was slightly longer than the first one and certainly included the greater, more difficult portion of our curriculum. Please consider this as you review your student's marks. A grade that is the same or lower than the previous term does not necessarily indicate a lack of effort. It may just be a result of the increased complexity of our studies. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].

Our "Popcorn Writing" Story! (One sentence from each person's book transformed into a crazy tale!)
Space aliens locked in intergalactic battles, greedy pirates digging for treasure, and superheroes with the power to make friends wherever they go. As the New Year’s Eve, we stay up until midnight so Clifford can blow his New Year’s horn. It was time for school’s annual Fish Fry picnic. I’ve never seen such beautiful toys! Jack sat on the porch reading in the summer twilight. It was a quiet night until THUNK, CREAK, and knock! Knock! Knock! To begin with, place five dispensers facing upward with a single block gap between them. Brigid went to her mother and said, “I need some colouring markers.” For the first week of their lives, puppies will do nothing but eat and sleep. The group leaders need to make an equal team for each Sports Day activity. Then Clifford saw their shopping cart roll away while they opened their car. He tried to stop the cart! Just then, Max burst into the room yelling, “Listen to the quacking! My flock has returned! I can’t wait to see them!” But on their way home, the streets looked different. Inside the palace, a banquet awaited Clara and the Nutcracker Prince. She was going to marry a prince. Brigid went to her mother and said, “I need some colouring markers!” As soon as Pooh reached his thoughtful spot, he sat down and tried to think of something. Just then, Peter’s grandfather came out of the gate. A moose family just moved in! There are many different neighbourhoods in New Delhi.

A note from Mrs. Smith:
Please encourage your child to practice their recorder. Our short classes do not allow sufficient time for practicing of new skills that are taught. As little as five minutes a day can have a very positive impact on student progress! As we continue to work on recorder, students who are practicing are coming prepared to learn new skills and students who don't are becoming frustrated when they aren't able to keep up. The only way to remember note names, notes on the staff, and fingering positions, is through repeated exposure during practice. The recorder can be a beautiful and rewarding instrument to play if sufficient time is given to practicing!
Thank you for your support!
Any questions? Contact me at [email protected]

Students come back on January 8 (Tuesday). Happy Winter Break!
December 20, 2018
How time flies - our last week before Winter Break!
In Language Arts, we've been learning how to write each part of a story and working on editing to add interesting vocabulary and more description to our vacation stories. We'll publish them in the new year!
We've learned about Peru, with a focus on geography. We had Mrs. Pagnucco come in and speak to the Grade 3's about her travels through the country and that was AWESOME! It was so cool to see pictures and souvenirs - thank you again for coming in!
Students built a luxury hotel out of toothpicks and marshmallows - we were impressed by the creativity displayed, as well as the cooperation and teamwork!
Coming up in January, we'll work more on story writing and paragraphs, practice adding and subtracting, continue building and testing different structures, and further explore people's quality of life in Peru.
I would like to wish you all a safe, relaxing, and fun Winter Break! It's been a great 4 months and the students have worked hard! See you all in January! :)

One more week of school to go! This past week, we've been up to lots of fun things! We had an awesome field trip to the Calgary Tower on Tuesday where we learned a lot of history and got to build our own structures. We've also been building in class, making towers out of straws and tape. It was challenging but our class had good ideas! Mrs. Day has been joining us for a fun writing project about where we'd send someone on vacation! We're working on this story one paragraph at a time and will continue this week. We've been working on measurement, cm and metres, and the relationship between them. This week, we'll try some adding as well! In Social, we're beginning our look at quality of life in Peru and are excited for a special guest speaker on Tuesday!

November 6, 2018 - Mid-week update!
In LA, we have been working hard on our Literacy stations. Students are reading and writing everyday through partner reading, non-fiction, Raz Kids, poetry, library, post office, handwriting and working on work. We've also been talking and writing about Remembrance Day and its importance.
In Math, we have been skip counting by 5, 10, 100, 3, 4, and 25! Students are encouraged to practice at home.
We're wrapping up our Rocks and Minerals unit in Science and will be moving into Building with Different Materials. Today we started talking about the Scientific Method for experiments.
In Social, we're working on the big topic of Quality of Life. We are comparing our daily lives to those of children in other countries. It will be interesting to see the similarities and differences!

Science: We did some fun observing of carbonates reacting with acid (vinegar!) and started looking at soil. We'll continue this next week!
Social: We are learning how to be great global citizens! Here's the link to a video we watched in class this week: If the World Were a Village of 100

What a whirlwind week we've had!
LA: We've been continuing our Parts of Speech studies - we've now learned about nouns and verbs! Literacy stations are starting up this week and students are all set up with their Raz Kids accounts. This will be part of our literacy stations, but are also welcome to be used at home too!
Math: We've finished up our Shapes unit and are working on some Number concepts: representing numbers in different ways, reading and writing three-digit numbers, and working on expanded form. Next week, we're going to be looking carefully at place value and base 10 blocks.
Social: We've continued to examine and discuss how our physical geography has an impact on our lives - we depend on it, we adapt to it, and we change it! We'll be studying the ways we can care for it and then moving into Global Citizenship!
Science: We've been learning all kinds of vocabulary and classifying information about Rocks and Minerals! Our fieldtrip to the Glenbow on Wednesday will be awesome and tell us even more about rocks! We'll be classifying and testing different rocks and minerals on the trip and in class.
Please send in headphones (in a labelled bag) if you haven't already done so.

It has been a very busy week of learning in Grade 3MW!
LA: We've been reading our novel, Ella Enchanted, as a read aloud to explore Ella's journey of breaking her obedience curse. We've also begun working on Parts of Speech. We also made acrostic poems about fall-related words!
Math: We've been finishing up our Shapes unit. We have sorted 2D shapes into regular and irregular and learned some important vocabulary about 3D shapes. Students have been conferencing with Ms. W to show their knowledge!
Science: We are continuing our study of Rocks and Minerals. We've worked on the properties of minerals and will be putting this knowledge to good use next week when we start looking at and comparing rocks!
Social: We've talked about geography - focusing on landforms and physical geography! We had some great brainstorming yesterday.
