Welcome back to the blog! This week we read the novel Fantastic Mr. Fox and compared how Roald Dahl's author voice was evident in both stories. We also had a very exciting visit from Marty Chan, an author who has written over thirteen children's novels. Students heard about how Mr. Chan was inspired to come an author and about how many of his own stories come free real life experiences.
In math students learned about how to find the area and perimeter of a polygon. On Friday students made perimeter robots and had to label and find the perimeter of all the parts of the robot. At the end students had to find the total perimeter of the entire robot! Next week, in math we will begin learning about Fractions!
Thank you to all the volunteers this year. We hope that you enjoyed the volunteer tea! Students performed the song "We Are One" for tea guests. Our class also contributed Georgia O'Keefe inspired Sunflower art. Georgia O'keefe was a modernist artist who is most famous for painting natural landscapes and oversized flowers. Students used chalk, blending, and smudging techniques to draw their sunflowers.
In science students were given the opportunity to choose any animal of interest to research using the new school iPad minis. Students found information about their animal's needs, habitat, adaptations, fun facts, and physical characteristics. We will be using this research to complete a project in the coming weeks.
If you read the blog this week please find the perimeter of a rectangle that is 7 cm by 4cm and write it in the Monday spot of the agenda!

Happy May Long Weekend! On Monday we began our week with BFG Day. On this day we did vocabulary and word work related to BFG and watched the Movie. Students used venn diagrams to compare and contrast the book and the movie. I was happy to hear that most students enjoyed reading the book more than watching the movie! This week we also learned about how an author has a unique style or voice. Students were challenged to write their own crazy dreams in the silly voice of BFG; we wrote our dreams on jars that we had painted with water colour pencil crayons.
In science this week we studied the lifecycles of amphibians. Students watched time lapse videos about the frog and salamanders! We also learned more about meal worms and their lifecycle. We were very lucky to have a guest speaker come, Helena and her mom in Ms. Spelay's class, and show her adult darkling beetles and how they changed over time. On Thursday students were given their own mealworm larva from Ms. Spelay; they recorded their first scientific observations of their worms. Students also named their meal worms and measured their current length. We are excited to observe the lifecycle changes of the meal worms over the next few weeks.
This week we practiced our division strategies and solve word problems related to definition from 50. Next week we will be begin a study of area and perimeter! Students took a division quiz on Thursday afternoon to show their learning about division.
If you read the blog this week please write the name of your Mealworm on the Monday spot in your agenda.

Hi families,
It wasonderful seeing so many of you at our family Math night on Thursday! We hope this night gave you some ideas about how to integrate the joy of math into family activities! This week in math we continued to practice division; specifically we focused on repeated subtraction and related facts. We will continue to practice division and will have a quiz next week. Students are encouraged to relate facts by their fact family to help them improve automaticity in working with both operations.
On Monday we got our four new shrimp friends named: Bubbles, Sir Swims Alot, Shelby, and Johnny. We researched their needs for care, their natural habitat, and other interesting facts! We made predictions about their lifecycle and are excited to hopefully see the full lifecycle from egg to adult before the end of the year. Students also had the opportunity to learn about the lifecycle of the meal worm with Ms. Spelay and spent time observing real meal worms at various stages in the lifecycle.
We finished our BFG novel! We have been doing lots of comprehension activities and will continue with the fun on Monday. We will be having a BFG character day on Monday; students are welcome to dress up as a character from the book or can wear their pajamas like Sophie the main character in the book. We will be watching the movie on Monday as well so we can compare the movie and the book!
In social studies students learned about transportation in all four countries of study (Ukraine, India, Peru, and Tunisia). Next week will begin researching more about how values and factors affect quality of life in Ukraine.
If you checked the blog this week - write the name of your three favourite characters in BFG on Monday!

Welcome back to the blog! This week was exciting as we started diving into new science and social studies units. On Monday we celebrated Ukrainian Easter by learning about the traditional practice of making Pysanky eggs. Students then used watercolour paints and pastels to make their own pysanky eggs patterns. Students also used computers to research interesting facts about Ukraine to go along with their art. Students finished their Indian Food Menus using the Microsoft Word menu template. We also learned about the geography and landforms of Ukraine.
In math we continued to practice division strategies. Specifically we practiced using equal groups and arrays to create division equations. Next week we will work on repeated subtraction and the rules of division. We are very excited for our family Math Night on Thursday May 9 @ 6:30.
In Science we began our study of animal lifecyles. We are excited to welcome our new classroom pets - shrimp into our classroom on Monday. Students will have the opportunity to observe the entire lifecyle of shrimp from eggs to adulthood. On Friday students completed research about an animal from the bird, amphibian, mammal, and fish orders of animals using national geographic for kids online.
In writing this week we learned different ways to enhance our writing with details. We learned about similes and added a few to our narrative writing. We have also been focusing on developing character traits and setting as well as using these skills to write novel reflection responses.
If you read the blog this week draw equal groups to solve this equation: 24÷3 = ? In your agenda!

Welcome back to the blog! In Math we began learning about how to solve multiplication problems by using arrays. First we built arrays using blocks and then we learned about how to draw arrays. After students had a solid understanding of arrays we looked at the 2 and 3 multiplication tables. We used hundreds charts to skip count, learned a song to help us remember, and practiced solving some basic multiplication word problems. Next week we will learn some other helpful strategies for multiplying.
In science we learned about pitch! We did a science experiment where students had to drop different objects from 10cm and rate the sound based on its volume and high or low pitch. This week in social studies we learned about the Holi Festival of Colours in India. This celebration commemorates the beginning of spring and celebration of love, family, and friends. One student in our class shared some of the traditional clothing worn in India for every day life, church, and special occasions. We also got to look at some bangles, slippers, and hair adornments. Students were excited to see the different types of fabric and the intricate bead work. Students also finished their Indian Elephants - these will be featured at next weeks student led conferences!
We began our narrative story writing unit this week! First we learned about generating ideas and brainstorming. Then we learned how to narrow down our ideas to the ones that would best sustain an entire story. We learned about different ways to plan for a story using pictures, words, and graphic organizers. This week we also learned how to grab the attention of our readers by using a hook such as a question, opinion, description, interesting fact, quote, or sound word. We used different picture prompts to practice writing exciting hooks and shared our ideas with others. Next week students will use their story plan to begin writing!
* If you read the blog this week please put the answer to 2X9 on Monday in your agenda :)

Welcome Back to the Blog! This week in science we were lucky to have two presentations related to Hearing and Sound! We got to see a hearing experiment performed, Mrs. P shared with students about her hearing journey, taught students some sign language, and showed students some technology that she uses to assist her through every day tasks such as a machine that vibrates under her pillow to wake her up in the morning, and special telephones that were used with a keyboard before texting was widely used. We also learned more about hearing loss and about how how it may be harder to hear certain pitches or sounds.
We had a celebration to share our Peru Nonfiction books with other students in the Learning Commons from grades 1,2, and 3! We also learned more about India ---- students read articles in groups about India's different geographical regions . They shared about their region and made a chart to share important facts with the rest of the class. Students also learned about education in India. We learned a few basics of the Hinduism religion and learned about how Indian elephants are sacred animals. They are used for work, as a means of transportation, and they are also celebrated at festivals and dressed as well as painted in bright colours. We had a guided drawing lesson and drew an elephant - we decorated our elephants with symbols and began to add color using water colour pencils. We will finish this art next week!
In Math we reviewed addition and subtraction word problems and strategies. We took a quiz to show what we know! We also began to discuss multiplication. Students are excited to begin! One way to help your student is to point out real world scenarios that arise as you when use multiplication at home for ex; (when your buying multiple items that are the same price at the grocery store or when you are thinking about ordering pizza - if everyone eats two slices of pizza and there is 7 people how many pieces of pizza do you need). We also learned to think of the multiplication symbol as the words "groups of" for example: 3 groups of 5 - then you can draw a picture three groups of five. There are also some great multiplication songs that can be found on youtube to help learn multiplication facts - Mrs. Campbell will be sharing these videos as we begin to learn more! In Grade 3 students are working towards solving multiplication problems up to 5X5 .
If you read the blog this week write the word MULTIPLICATION in the box for next Monday in your agenda!

Hi Families,
It was an exciting short week in grade 3. We began learning about the parts of a story (beginning, middle, end, problem and solution). We read the fairytales Hansel and Gretel & Emperors New Clothes. After reading we identified and paraphrased the most essential parts of the story. When reading fiction at home this is great skill to practice with your child.
We also began our country study of India. We have starting looking at factors such as geography, climate, and natural resources. We discussed the Spice Trade and its influence on foods around the world - we smelled some mystery spices from India and made guesses to what we thought they were (cinnamon, tumeric, cumin, ginger, and paprika). One of our friends in the class shared about her Indian culture through a poster with lots of pictures. This week students also connected to their previous learning in the building unit by taking a virtual tour of the Taj Mahal and reading about how it was built.
In Math we are practicing strategies for subtracting two and three digit numbers from 1 000. This skill is quite a jump from grade 2 subtraction (numbers from 100) please continue to review basic subtraction facts with your child to support. I hope the homework last night helped you see how your child is doing with this skill so far. We will continue to practice subtraction in the coming weeks.
In health this week we read the story of Temple Grandin called "The Girl who Thought in Pictures." Our focus is building capacity for empathy and treating others with compassion.
Upcoming:
Wednesday Feb 27 - Pink Shirt Day
Thursday Feb 28 - Family Movie Night at HWS
Hi Families,
It was an exciting short week in grade 3. We began learning about the parts of a story (beginning, middle, end, problem and solution). We read the fairytales Hansel and Gretel & Emperors New Clothes. After reading we identified and paraphrased the most essential parts of the story. When reading fiction at home this is great skill to practice with your child.

Hi Families,
I hope that everyone has had a great start to their long weekend! This week we finished our Building and Testing Unit - students reviewed their peer feedback and were given the opportunity to apply modifications based on feedback and new learning. Students then completed more tests to their structures to test for strength an stability! Our bridges will be available for you to view at next months learning conferences. We will begin our new science unit on Hearing and Sound next week!
We are in the final process of working on our Peru Non-fiction books. Students have been putting the final touches on their writing and working on their book covers! We will begin moving towards story writing when we are finished! In Social Studies we learned about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Each student was assigned the task of creating a poster that illustrated the meaning of one of the rights. We discussed how these rights affect quality of life and listened to some powerful stories about children in other countries related to the Rights of the Child. Next week in Social Studies we will begin our exploration of how factors and values affect the quality of life in India.
In Math we continued our practice of adding three digit numbers to 1 000. Hopefully the homework sent last week gave you an opportunity to see how your child is doing with their addition practice. Please remember there are tons of games and ways to practice addition that can be accessed online. IXL https://ca.ixl.com/math/grade-3/add-three-or-more-numbers-up-to-three-digits-word-problems is a great resource to use for practice! Next week we will begin looking at subtraction strategies.
We finished our week with a celebration of friendship, we handed out Valentine's, made cards, and had fun in math with some themed graphing and building activities!
If you read the blog this week please draw a star on Monday's space in the agenda!

Wow what a wonderful week! Thank you to everyone who came to our Family Literacy Night, I hope that you were able to find a couple of fun activities that you can use to support your child in their literacy development at home.! Literacy comes alive through great conversations and play! This week students started to finish up their non-fiction paragraphs for their books - we will be excited to share these at student led conferences in March. Students also learned how to create their own "About the Author" pages for their books.
This week students also continued to work on their bridges. We conducted three tests to observe strength and stability. After testing students were given the option to add new materials to their design. After more refinements were made students gave feedback to other groups (a compliment and a question). Next week students will review their peer feedback and make additional changes. In math students continue to use addition strategies to add and subtract 2 and 3 digit numbers!
On Friday we had a Fiesta to celebrate Peruvian culture. Thank you to all of the families that sent in a Peruvian dish. Students sampled dishes such as traditional rice, piccarones (Peruvian doughnuts), and quinoa soup! At our celebration we also listened to traditional music, drew the rainbow mountains of Peru, and listened to an Incan Folktale. Our next country of study will be India!
Upcoming Dates:
February 13 - Valentines Classroom Celebration (students may bring cards, there are 24 students in our class)

Hi Families,
This week we began a new literacy station called Wall Stories. We used the our class written version of Three Billy Goats Gruff for this activity. Each group of students had a different job to help code the text (change boring verbs to juicy verbs, find definitions for new words, etc). This story will be up in our classroom if you would like to see it at Family Literacy Night next Thursday. We continued working on our Peruvian Non-fiction Book - students have started their final drafts. This week we learned how to used magazines to create a mixed media photograph to accompany our paragraphs.
In math we began working on adding two digit numbers, this is review from last year - but many students are still working on strategies for regrouping (making a new ten - also known as carrying and borrowing). We will continue to practice this and we will then move on to adding three digit numbers up to 1 000. We are playing many games in class to help students continue to be comfortable with adding using mental math, personal strategies, and using objects to illustrate an addition sentence.
In Science we began building bridges out of different wooden objects (popsicle sticks, skewers, wooden blocks, etc). Each group has created a prototype that they will use to keep adding, changing, and refining. We will be conducting tests to ensure strength and stability. In health we discussed the importance of mental health on Bell Let's Talk Day and how we would like to create a climate where others are comfortable to share thoughts, feelings, and struggles. We discussed positive ways to support others when they would like to share their feelings, and actions to take if someone asks for help.
On Friday Februrary 8, we will be wrapping up of Learning of Peru by having a Fiesta to celebrate culture. Please see the note that went home on Thursday, if you would like to help by making a Peruvian dish please email Mrs. Campbell at [email protected] or communicate through the agenda.

This week students were tasked to build a skyscraper model from kinex (see photos below ). Each group's challenge was to design and build a skyscraper that was 60 cm tall, could hold the weight of a textbook, and had multiple floors. Students also had to record materials used, pre planning, and final designs. This week we also learned to a new literacy station - keyboarding. Students have been using www.typingclub.com and bbc dance mat (both are free to use) to practice. Our technology specialist visited us twice this week to teach us how to use google drive and how to email and share documents to Mrs. Campbell.
We began a 30 days of gratitude project in our visual journal each day asks us to draw something we are grateful for (memories, food, smells, etc). We will continue doing this each until the end of January. In social studies we learned about Peruvian Education and a bit about the economy. On Friday Students visited Ms. Spelay's classroom to learn about Housing in Peru. We are very excited about the final writing/social studies project we are working on!
In Music students are working with Mrs. Smith on recorders (please see her blog for more information).
Upcoming:
January 21-26 - Winter Walk and Wishes week (we are collecting donations of hats, scarves, and gloves)

Welcome back and Happy New Year! This week students were eager to share their about their experiences from winter break - students began the week by creating snapshots of their winter break and writing a paragraph to share with their peers. Students also engaged in goal setting for 2019, we discussed the importance of approaching the new year with a growth mindset and positivity.
In math we started working towards our new learning goal: I can use mental math strategies to add numbers from 0-20. We have have been playing addition games and have learned about the associative and commutative properties of addition. Flashcards and online addition games are a great way to practice. If students are fluent in these facts move on to subtraction!
In social studies we continue to examine how different factors and values shape the quality of life in Peru. We learned about family structures in Peru as well as community services that are available to citizens such as healthcare, education, and safety.
Students have begun their gymnastics unit with Mr. J in the gym! It is so exciting to see them develop their skills! Mrs. Smith has sent out a form for buying recorders - please return this as soon as possible.
On Friday students were given a choice in winter art projects. Students either painted a winter cardinal scene with Ms. Spelay or a winter barn scene with Mrs. Campbell. We use pastels, tempura paint, geometric shapes, and mixing techniques!

It was an exciting week! We had an awesome field trip to Calgary Tower - some of the activities students participated include - tour of the glass floor and descriptions of buildings in the tower's skyline view, short movie in the new tower theatre about the tower's history, building their own wind resistant towers out of various materials, and a Tower trivia scavenger hunt! A big thank you to all of our volunteers!
In writing we practiced recording and choosing important facts about the tower and wrote a paragraph that had a minimum of 4 facts that include data (numbers, dates, percentages). The prompt was "Why is Calgary Tower an important Landmark in Calgary?" Students are also learning to paraphrase information and facts into their own words for note taking and informational writing.
In math this week we practiced ordering three digit numbers from least to greatest and greatest to least. Students also are practicing skip counting forwards and backwards from 1 000. Goal: I can skip count by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, and 10s to 1 000. Please continue to practice this with your student as this is an important skill to master prior to multiplication later in the year. We also did some challenging Winter word problems that included multiple steps and addition and subtraction.
Upcoming Math in January ---- we will be reviewing basic addition and subtraction facts and then will be moving into addition and subtraction with 2 and 3 digit numbers.
In Social Studies we formulated questions related to an interesting landmark in Peru ,Machu Picchu such as "Who built Machu Picchu" and "What is the quality of life like so high in the mountains?" Later in the week Mrs. Wadja led us in how to conduct internet research to find the answers to our questions. We are focusing on being able to identify and evaluate appropriate and factual sources.
In science, while brainstorming about buildings, students started to wonder about other types of structures in cities, rural communities and other parts of the province in connection with quality of life. Some students mentioned seeing water towers while driving through places like Red Deer, Alberta or visiting states across the border and wondered about safe drinking supplies worldwide. Students learned water towers provide clean water for community consumption and are used to provide water supplies in times of emergency. Students then got together to use pipe cleaners, cups and tape to create their very own water satellite towers that were capable of supporting actual water supplies! In science we also took a closer look at the pros and cons of using different types of materials when building structures such as skyscrapers. Our goal is to be able to evaluate different materials that should be used for different purposes, functions, weather situations, and cost.

We had a short learning filled week! On Monday we began learning about cultural traditions and celebrations in Peru. We learned about the celebration La Noche Buena (Peruvian Christmas). We also examined clothing artifacts from Peru, a sweater made of llama, a woven purse, and traditional Peruvian outfit. We then made FALALALA LLamas with decorative scarves as our project for Deck the Halls - ask your student about the final product. Students used water colored paint, oil pastels, and sketching techniques to create their llamas. On Tuesday we immersed ourself into a Peruvian cultural practice of weaving. Students created a piece with different colors of thick wool yarn; student's weaving was inspired by the rainbow mountains of Peru. In math students continued to practice using greater than, less than, and equal to to compare numbers to 1 000. Students also used the words true and false to create and evaluate number statements.

Message from Mrs. C
Hi families! I just wanted to say a quick thank you for your participation at student led conferences. It was a joy to watch the students sharing their learning! We have been very fortunate to have Ms. Leaver, our student teacher in our classroom over the past month. She has brought many enriching ideas and activities to the classroom; she will be greatly missed as she finishes her field experience with us next week.
Other Learning this week (Ms. Leaver)
In social studies we began learning about Peru, we created personal inquiry questions to drive our research in this unit. Our big question while studying is, "How do different values and factors affect quality of life in Peru. We began learning about the geography of Peru, where it is in the world as well as where it it in relationship to Canada. We delved further into our geographical study of Peru by researching the different regions. This included looking at the landforms, climate, population, and vegetation.
In math we have been having lots of fun with our learning. We have become place value detectives finding clues to discover the place value for our numbers. We have been singing songs about crocodiles chomping up numbers in greater than, less than, and equal to.
We have been learning more about our building unit in science developing a deeper understanding of what makes structures strong and resilient through creating and looking at fastener boards which will also helps us in our future building challenges.
We have been connecting all of our learning into our art by creating a 3-D sculpture fastener board, discovering how art impacts our everyday lives, our communities, our world, and our quality of life.

Hey families, Welcome back to the blog! We had an another busy week; we continued working on representing and describing numbers to 1 000. Students played place value yahtzee, bingo, and an expanded notation game with cups. We also did an activity where we generated in small groups all the different ways to make 1 000.
In science we began our new unit "Building with a variety of Materials". Students in Mrs. Campbell and Ms. Spelay's classes were put into small groups and given 20 pieces of spaghetti, one meter of masking tape, and one big marshmallow. Students had five minutes of planning time and 20 minutes of time to build the tallest tower. In this challenge we noticed how important team work and collaboration are when building things. Our tallest tower was 72 cm tall! On Thursday we were visited by Mr. Dunn, an architectural technologist who told us about the design thinking process. Students also completed the "Build Harry a Tower" challenge with straws and tape!
In social studies we have began to work on our final draft of the our Quality of Life Recipe, we are excited to share these with you at Student Led Conferences next Thursday and Friday (November 22 and 23). Please sign up for a 20 minute spot for Student Led Conferences :).

Hi Families,
It was another great week of learning in grade 3! This week we began a new math unit! Students are currently working on describing and representing numbers to 1 000. In science we learned about the six steps of the scientific method and how to apply them in the context of an experiment. This will be helpful as we start our science unit "Building with a Variety of Materials". On Wednesday an architect guest speaker will be visiting our classroom!
In writing we are focusing on non-fiction (informational) pieces. Students have been practicing paragraph writing. Our goal is to write a topic sentence, three supporting details, and a closing sentence. In social studies we are continuing to examine quality of life. This week we looked carefully at different factors that contribute to quality of life and rated them in their order of importance. We noticed that it was hard to come to a decision as a group because we all have different values. Students are making recipe cards that show the ingredients they feel are most essential to have a good quality of life.
On Wednesday we studied the holiday Diwali, which has roots in India. Diwali is celebrated sometime during October or November depending on the cycle of the moon. Students created their own paper lanterns with special designs in celebration of the triumph of good over evil, and learned about “deepavali”, which are lights lit during the Diwali festival.
We celebrated Remembrance Day with a heart felt ceremony on Friday. Students studied the poem 'In Flanders Fields' by John McCrae. We also read several stories about the importance of Remembrance Day and students painted their own field of poppies using different brush stroke and blending techniques.
Upcoming:
- Book Fair November 19-23
- Thursday November 22nd Early Dismissal/ Student Led Conferences
-Friday November 23 No School/Student Led Conferences
- Deck the Halls December 3rd AM
- Field Trip to Calgary Tower Monday December 10

We had an amazing week! We went on our first field trip to the Glenbow Museum. Thank you to all who volunteered! This week we also made rock crystals and observed how big they got after 24 hours. We will observe again on Monday!
Today students used watercolours, coloured pencils, and pastels to sketch crystals and geodes. We used salt to give the geodes texture and geometric lines to make the crystals look multi-dimensional. We also paid close attention to colour to make them look realistic!
This week we started using the calendars in our agendas; we labeled some important things like the dates of winter break and spring break! We are learning how to record information and problem solve using dates. We will continue to practice this as we move forward with measurement. We will be learning how to measure things using liters and milliliters.
In Social Studies we are continuing our study of global citizenship. We discussed different ways humans can impact their environment. Students made posters to teach others about ways to care for the Earth.

Hi Families,
A few exciting celebrations from this week:
- Hawkwood School exceeded its goal of raising $3500 for Terry Fox! As promised Mr. J shaved his head and beard, and Mr. Lang dyed his hair orange to show their support.
- As a class we earned our goal of 20 brownie points for working together/positive behaviours. Students chose a reward of PJ day. We also watched a movie!
Some things we learned this week:
- We continued to study how geologists identify rocks and minerals by properties. Students tested rocks for properties of texture, colour, luster, cleavage/fracture, hardness, and streak!
- We are discussing global citizenship in Social Studies. Students researched the life of a student from either Ethiopia, India, Russia, or Brazil and compared and contrasted the student's life with their own life.
- In math, we are learning about mass and weight using grams and kilograms. Students used non-standard scales to compare objects as heavier, lighter, or balanced.
Upcoming:
10/15
On Monday we will go on our first field trip to the Glenbow Museum! Please send your child with a litterless lunch/snack if possible. Backpacks are not allowed in the museum (we will be leaving them at school). It is very important to be on time on Monday, we will be leaving the school shortly after the bell rings.

Hi Families,
It was another great week of learning in Grade 3. This week we learned the rules of measurement in math and made our own rulers with centimeters and millimeters. Students also spent time using Raz-Kids this week. Students will visit Raz-Kids as a literacy station once a week at school, this online learning tool can also be used at home - students wrote our classroom details in their agendas. In writing we practiced our editing skills and wrote acrostic poems. We spent time learning about Terry Fox's life and finished Terry's run at our school wide run on Friday! In science we focused on the layers of the Earth. We are collecting mason jars for an upcoming science experiment. Students are welcome to bring interesting rocks and minerals from home if they wish to share with the class.
Upcoming:
- Orange Shirt Day Monday October 1
- Glenbow Museum Fieldtrip October 15 - forms will be going home soon
- Thanksgiving Holiday Monday October 8

Hi families! Thank you so much for the turn out at Meet the Teacher. It was great to connect with so many of you! In math we finished our shape unit by building 3D shapes out of plasticine and toothpicks. On Thursday we began discussing measurement. We explored the two questions: Why do we measure? What do we use to measure? Next week will begin to use both standard and non-standard forms of measurement. In science we learned about the 3 types of rocks metamorphic, igneous, and sedimentary. We examined different rocks with magnifying glasses and sketched the things we noticed while making predictions about what type of rock it might be. Students noticed that many sedimentary rocks have layers! In social studies we labeled our own world map with the continents and oceans. We are now working towards using the cardinal directions to describe where different places are in relation to Canada!
Upcoming:
Picture Day Monday September 24
Toonies for Terry will be collected at the school for the next two weeks.
Terry Fox Run September 28 on the field
Field Trip dates for Glenbow Museum Trip coming soon!

Welcome Back Students and Families!
It was a wonderful first week of school in grade 3! We spent time getting to know each other, wrote about our summer, and created our classroom expectations. One of our favourite activities this week was sketching minion portraits. Our portraits included our unique personalities, next week we will write a bit about ourselves!
We began reading our first novel "One and Only Ivan." We also went on a shape hunt around the school to find 2D and 3D shapes ! Next week we will start setting some academic goals together for the beginning of the school year. We will also begin our first math unit where we will study shapes and measurement.
